Obesity is a chronic disease that requires lifelong management. The best treatment for obesity (class I or greater) with medical comorbidities involves surgical intervention. Despite the safety and long-term efficacy of our procedures, partial response and/or complications mandate additional procedures and therapies consistent with ethical patient care. Once only relegated to few, highly experienced individuals or centers, re-operative surgery is becoming more commonplace as the numbers and variability of procedures increase. Unfortunately, because of the inability to control for the many confounding variables, definitive studies comparing different interventions are rare. For the surgeon who sees these issues rarely as well as the experienced surgeon who lacks the resource of volume to do comparative studies, there is a need for guidance in this respect.
The purpose of this First International Consensus Meeting on Revisional Bariatric/Metabolic Interventions (ICC-RBMI) is to lay the foundation to fill this void; not only to provide guidance for practicing surgeons, but also to establish the framework to answer the questions that will lead to improved quality and consistency of care for our patients.
This activity is developed for General Surgeons, Bariatric Surgeons, and other Allied Health Professionals interested in the medical and surgical advancements and management of clinically severe obesity.
Explore leading-edge clinical and technical innovations related to the advanced management and treatment of severe obesity. This activity is designed to address the following ABMS / IOM competencies: Patient Care and Medical Knowledge.
The objective of the ICC-RBMI is to study, interpret, and discuss available evidence in order to develop and publish expert consensus on the following topics:
- Identifying appropriate candidates for RBMI
- Identifying interventions that provide benefit for patients and under what circumstances
- Define next steps in order to obtain and evaluate collective data regarding RBMI
- Explain what evidence is lacking in the scientific literature and what work needs to be done in order to address these deficiencies
- Discuss nomenclature for various procedures/interventions in RBMI
